Second band of a three-band night.
Damn, this was
fun!
But before we get to our show...
We got there while the early
Saturday open mic was still going on. Victor, the club’s
manager, had agreed to let a band try out after the open mic
and before the official show was to
begin.
I couldn’t believe it, but this band actually started
setting up onstage while one of the open mic guys was in the
middle of
his stand-up act. Stand-up comedy is hard enough without a bunch
of amateurs from Jersey climbing on and off the stage in the
middle of your act. How he didn’t haul off and start throwing
punches is beyond me. On top of that, the band took an extra
20 minutes to set up, the drummer had to borrow John G’s
drum seat, and they played for way to friggin’ long for
a tryout. Nice job, dipshits.
We were scheduled for 9, and we
took the stage at about 9:30. Hence, to any TFL friends who felt
that they had to wait too
long to see us, we agree, and we apologize.
Once we took the stage, though, we were on fire. We blasted through
the first half of the set sounding great, with very few mistakes.
My glasses flew off during She Was Just a Girl, so that threw
me for a loop for about 15 secs. I jumped into a chorus one measure
early, but the band was right there to cover my error. We went
from that immediately into a very well-received version of Bowie’s
Ziggy Stardust.
Early on, we debuted a brand new song - Baghdad.
It was shaky, but even in its tentative form, it sounded pretty
solid.
We had a fairly large, and very receptive audience, and
it made for a great show. We were having a really fun time, and
it felt
like the audience was right there with us. TFL friend Pam had
requested Superstar before we went on, so not only did we dedicate
the song to her, we lied and said that it was a true story about
her.
Then we went into Achiever, and things fell apart by the
last verse. Basically, John B just simply forgot the song. The
band
stopped playing, and we all burst out laughing.
This stuff is bound to happen on occasion, but sometimes, it
can cause an otherwise solid gig to drop into the toilet. Lucky
for us, we pulled it together real quickly for an angry post-election
tear through Eve of Destruction. That kept us on track for the
duration of the show.
All in all, we had a whole lot of fun.
