Last band of a 2-band night (sort-of).
The whole band hadn't been feeling too well, so
we didn't have a chance to promote as hard as we normally do,
but we still had a decent showing.
We had promised a surprise for those who showed,
and - true to our word - everyone who came to the show to support
us received a free Tied For Last T-Shirt. Everyone who received
them should thank bassist John B because, while we all paid
for them, he did all the work.
The band that was scheduled to precede us (from
Ohio) ended up being a no-show. So while some of our friends
and fans showed, there was no one else in the place other than
TFL supporters. The downside of this is that there's no one
to "win over," and we feel that winning over new people
is one of our strong points. On the bright side, we pretty much
had full control over the joint, so we ended up playing about
15-20 minutes longer than we would be able to at most clubs.
As I said, we weren't feeling all that great at
the beginning, so we had the longest set-up time we've ever
had. I think it took about 20 minutes (though it felt like 40).
Once we were onstage, though, we clicked very early and were
damn consistent all the way through.
Adrenaline and copious amounts of caffeine can
get me through pretty much anything. Lucky for me, my good friend
MAGGIE gave me a couple of cases of "Water Joe" (caffeinated
bottled water) for my birthday in August and I had two bottles
left that I used at the gig - so Maggie gets a BIG THANKS!
Not sure how the rest of the guys pulled through,
but other than a minor screw-up here or there, we were all dead
on. Tom even started doing a lot of heavy-metal "tapping"
on the guitar. It sounded awesome!
John B. got to say his first official words on
mic, but, due to the profanity, I won't repeat them here.
As for John G, it was the second time that he
brought in audience members! I think he's no longer ashamed
of us.
Though we had a smaller audience than the past
couple of times we played here, Victor (the club's owner/booker)
pulled me aside after and said that we sounded better this night
than he's ever heard us sound. In a business where bookers and
promoters tend to care only about the number of drinkers you
bring into their establishments, he stands out as a very rare
exception. Thanks, Victor!
