Last band of a 4-band night.
We were relegated to a crappy set day and time
because our last gig here didn't pull in the amount of people
they wanted us to get. Every other gig we played there had a
pretty decent to very good showing - especially compared to
their typical very low turnout, but, as Outkast say: "You're
only funky as your last cut." Our last cut at Acme wasn't
too funky, so Monday night at 11 it is.
The good news is that the Acme employees who are
actually there when we play (bartender, sound guy, etc.) are
usually pretty cool, so we were into it. Also, we had a few
friends of our own who showed up to cheer us on, so what's not
to be psyched about?
The two-man act before us was a singer/songwriter
guy and his (apparently hired-gun) drummer. The guy was a bit
of a prima donna, and he started bitching/mumbling to himself
when he finished and we started loading our equipment onstage.
Not immediately clearing a stage for the next
band, and/or not setting up ASAP when you're the next band on
is a sure sign of 1 - amateur standing, 2 - an oversized ego,
or 3 - both. He was visibly annoyed when a girl who was there
to see him was digging our set and happily signed our mailing
list.
As for us, we always try to put on as good a show
as we can. It's usually pretty easy to get psyched up for a
big crowd. Smaller crowds can be a little tougher, but they
deserve no less of a show than a packed house. I hate it when
a band gets cranky and gives half the effort for the hardcore
people who actually showed up. Hell, they're your fans and friends,
and they paid their money to see a good show. That's why we
try and play even harder with a smaller crowd.
Such was the case this night, and I hope those
that were there to see us got their money's worth.
The show went pretty well and, with some thanks
to Jorge the sound guy, we sounded pretty good. My throat was
a little raw, but I didn't miss too many notes, and we did damn
solid versions of most of our songs. I always regret it when
I don't pay the sound guy to record the show.
We had to cut a few songs from our set on the
fly because it was getting late, so we ended up losing about
three songs, but all in all, I was very happy with the performance.
