Third band of a five-band night.
Maybe it's something about Acme.
Last time we played here, I was damn near dying,
and the two Johns showed up real late. This time it was Tom's
turn to be deathly ill, and John L was the only one late.
Tom covered his illness a lot better than I did
last time, and we ended up sounding great.
It was the night before Easter, so we didn't have
a huge crowd, but we did bring some. Also, the place was unusually
crowded (not packed, but for Acme, it was hoppin').
Tom, John G and I all got there early. We loaded
in our equipmet and waited for John L to show. ...and waited...
and waited...
At about 30 minutes to showtime, Lally still wasn't
there, so Tom and I got together to try and pick songs that
might sound good without bass. The plan was to do those first
in the hopes that he might show up at some point.
The band before us ended. No John.
We moved our equipment to the stage. No John.
We started our soundcheck, and John comes from
the back of the club, pushing his amp.
I tuned up his bass real quick, as he set up his
amp, and we only missed one song.
The stage sound was awesome! It makes such a difference
to a band when they can hear everything on the stage. When you
can't hear from the stage, even if you sound good to the crowd,
you end up playing and singing a little more tentatively than
you otherwise would, because you're constantly second-guessing
how it sounds.
When the band hears everything, though, they play
and sing far better, and they can correct any mistakes much
earlier. It's also a hell of a lot easier on the voice because
you're not trying to shout so that you can hear your voice in
the mix.
The result was, in my opinion at least, one of
our better shows. About half way through, we decided to try
the new song (we think it's called "She Was Just a Girl").
It sort of broke apart at one point, but we had given the audience
fair warning, so I don't think they held it against us.
