First band of a 3-band night.
The band is supposed to be at a gig an hour before
the scheduled start time. I show up at the Orange Bear about
an hour beforehand, and there are three people in the whole
place. All three were there for the open mic, which was ending
as I walked through the door. They left shortly thereafter.
My bandmates arrived shortly after me, but we
still had no audience there, and I was getting kinda concerned.
I knew that Rev. Caroline and Maggie were eating next door,
and John B. told me Jane was coming, but that still meant that
the band was outnumbering the audience.
Then a weird thing happened. About 15 mins before
start time, we had a long parade of friends show up. The parade
continued through the set and didn't actually stop until we
were two-thirds done with our performance, but by that point,
we were playing to a pretty full room. Whew!
The band and the audience seemed in very good
spirits, and the gig just flew by!
The guys really nailed the songs with one or two
really small exceptions. They all sounded great. I, however,
forgot lyrics to about a quarter of our songs. The only one
I really screwed up was "Superstar," but Tom covered
it for the most part.
Our upcoming Tuesday (2/3) show at The Continental
is the 45th anniversary of Buddy Holly's death, so we arranged
a cover of his "Rave On" which we debuted here to
make sure we have it down.
Also, for awhile now, while playing around in
practice, we'd been doing "Wasted" with Tom on vocals
and me on guitar. We did it with Tom on vox at the gig, and
it seemed to go over pretty well. It also gave my voice a nice
mid-set rest.
One small downside from the business end... For
some reason, Victor - the OB's manager - wasn't around for most
of the set, and the guy they had working the door didn't actually
start counting people until our set began. Hence, we only got
credit for having nine people there (we had FAR more than that).
I got a guarantee from the bartender that he would confirm to
Victor that we brought a much larger crowd than the nine who
were actually counted.
